A grandmother asked her grandson about sawan and he came up with an adroid app and said: “Dadi,Saavn dalo, jaan daalo”.Well, This was hilarious to her and she took some time to recover from the little shock which was given by her grandson.
But later she decided to explain him the things about hindu mythology and the importance of sawan.

Significance of Sawan:

We have seen that in the month of sawan, the people starts moving to temple for shiv puja everyday and specially on Monday.SO what does the story behind it? Why not people go to temple in any other month? IS there something special about this?

Well, yes. It is special. The “ShravanNakshatra rules the sky for the entire month that’s why it is called Shravan or sawan and it falls on the fifth month of Hindu calendar. This month is considered to be the most auspicious for Puja.
According to Hindu Mythology, the Samudra Manthan or churning of ocean took place in this month. During the churning, the poison “halahala” came out and the Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the world.
Due to poison his body temperature increased. All Devi-Devtas tried to reduce the temperature but nothing helped. So Lord Shiva wore the moon on this head which reduced the temperature.

It is also believed that Lord Indra rained heavily to reduce the temperature which became a reason to pour water on Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan.

According to this legend, Devi Sati also sacrificed her in this month and before dying she swore that she would marry Shiva in every succeeding life.Devi Sati was born as Parvati in her next life. She fasted during the month of sawan due to which Lord Shiva was impressed and they used to meet up on Monday. since then, the Monday and fasting has a great importance in the month of Sawan.

In 2015, the duration of this month is 1 August to 29 August. As per Marathi,Telugu,Gujarati & Kannada, Sawan begins on 15 August and ends on 13 September.
