Guru Purnima is dedicated to academic and spiritual teachers. In Hindu religion, Gurus are often related to God and the source that connects the individual to God.
The word Guru came from Sanskrit and made up of two words “Gu” and “Ru”. The meaning of “Gu” is darkness and the meaning of “Ru” is the one who removes the darkness.
Hence the Guru who removes the darkness and leads them to the light of wisdom and introduces them to God.

The full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad is considered as the day for Guru Purnima.The day to celebrate this is 31 July 2015.

Significance of Guru Purnima:

This was the day when rishi Veda Vyasa – the author of the Mahabharata – was born to sage Parashara and a fisherman’s daughter Satyavati,thus this day is also celebrated as Vyasa Purnima.
Buddhists also celebrate this festival. On this day Gautam Buddha taught his disciples the path of enlightenment. They celebrate this by observing uposatha(the cleansing of the defiled mind) and meditating.

According to Jain traditions, On this day, falling at the beginning of “CHAUMASAAS“,the four month rainy season retreat,Mahavira after attaining Kaivalya, made Indrabhuti Gautam his first disciple, thus becoming a Guru himself, therefore it is observed in Jainism as Guru Purnima, and is marked special veneration to one’s Gurus and teachers.

Guru Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gurur Devoh Maheswaraha
Guru Saakshaat Para Brahma, Tasmai Shree Guruve Namaha

Meaning – “Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru is Shiva ,Guru is the Absolute Brahman incarnate, Obeisance to Guru”
